Time management is the critical factor that leads to the success of many individuals. Few people do a lot of work and simultaneously have sufficient time to enjoy. While on the other hand, some people always complain about not having sufficient time. The reality states there is no shortage of time, but it’s all about time management.

Therefore, success does not only depend upon hard work but how you effectively and efficiently manage your time. Successful people attribute their success to effective time management activities in their routine life. If the time is distributed according to the work priorities, it helps us eliminate the wastage of time and energy. Furthermore, doing the right thing at the right time will result in increased productivity & efficiency. It becomes a crucial part of the journey of success for any person.

Likewise, an internship teaches students time management. It is very obvious that students excel in managing time management when it comes to studies. But what about time management in the corporate world? There is a saying that experience is the teacher of all things. Simultaneously during internships, students learn to segregate their tasks in times of deadlines given by the firm. An internship is all about self-learning and extracting the best out of it.

Principles of Effective Time Management

  1. Commitment — Commitment needs seriousness by devoting time to a task, and not delaying. Always remember to be brutally realistic and not idealistic when making scheduling your task. Therefore, creating a schedule and not sticking to your schedule will soon become meaningless.
  2. Pursue fun with a vengeance — Include time for enjoyable, rejuvenating and satisfying activities like sports, entertainment and many more. But do not forget to organize your task around the commitments to the fun.
  3. Time vs. task focus — Assume your day in terms of time, not completing tasks. Devote time to essential tasks every day. Sometimes it is hard to predict the task’s duration and accordingly schedule it. It is ok to reschedule regular time intervals and come back on the routine. Make an appointment with yourself for a period while playing or working and then set your purpose.
  4. One thing at a time — Recent research states that multi-tasking is a myth. In reality, we tend to switch back and forth between tasks. With each switch, we deliver a cognitive cost and a time cost. Also, it takes time for a normal human being to get mentally back into the task, thus making it less efficient. The switching process involves loss of depth in engagement and absorption.
  5. Block out time — Make it part of your routine. Analyze how many hours per week is required to devote to each task. Maintain and divide hours for working tasks in the course.
  6. First Things First — You need to prioritize the important tasks first and accordingly plan the following tasks. Any task scheduled later in the day has a high chance of getting interrupted by any chance. Simultaneously the main objective of completing a vital task is already over at the first half of the day.
  7. Flexibility — How can you incorporate flexibility into your schedule? It does not mean that you have to work according to the schedule by sacrificing the seriousness of that specific task. You have to take a call when things come up and whether to diverge from your established schedule or to focus on other things. Switching blocks of time can reflect new commitments.
  8. Respond vs. react — At the time of decision‐making, one has to figure out all the consequences. It is said that fast decisions can have a negative impact on the planned task. Always pause, take a moment to think. Don’t let “mind games” create justifications get in the way or lead you astray.

All these above points help a student to excel in their internship. As a result, it enables students to become a profession by managing time on its own. Experts agree that self-learning is the best learning.

The road ahead

Time management is very vital for an entry-level individual. Internships can also teach time management which will be useful for his future. Nowadays, internships can be online or offline, it carries the same value. Likewise, Ulead is a flagship internship program for students to make careers and Upskill. We believe that to reinvent learning and make a difference in the education system, there is nobody better than the youth who are currently a part of it.
